Bert Hardy was a London-based press photographer who took thousands of photos for Picture Post through the 1940s and 1950s. I used several images by his colleague Raymond Kleboe, but couldn’t quite force a direct enough connection to Alan Turing to get any of Hardy’s Manchester pictures into the book. Thanks to Getty Images you can browse them yourself for free here. There are some astonishing and chilling photographs taken inside Strangeways, and an education themed shoot presumably designed to contrast Salford schools with Manchester Grammar, but here are a couple I liked, of the Manchester Stock Exchange and of models from a Manchester modelling school. Both now having ceased trading after, in their different ways, making a lot of money for the owners from the dreams of the users…(both copyright by Bert Hardy/Hulton Archive/Getty Images).
